How do I stop my dog from barking?

We have to remember that a dog’s bark is something that cave men encouraged in the wolf-like ancestors of modern canines hundreds of thousands of years ago. The fact that a dog could alert them to danger in their camps, settlements, and farms was one of the many qualities of dogs that brought our two species together. Lets face it; if a dog didn't alert to the lion or bear, then the dog was probably killed and eaten. Now that is what I call a breeding program.

It is good that they bark, if you have ever spend the night in Africa (in a tent), then you know what I mean. You want the yippiest dogs you can find. The party I was with took the entrails out of the Cape Buffalo they had killed and threw them out in a circle around the camp. The jackals came around and ate, spent then night right there in a circle around the camp. The reason this was explained; if a larger predator came around, the jackals would cry out. Did you ever think the first dogs might have been jackals and not wolves?

But, unless you are in Africa, admitedly it will drive you crazy. If they are barking just to bark, I hose them down with the water hose. If they are in a crate, don't need out, but are barking, I use a short burst of Lysol aerosol or a spray of diluted "Simple Green" from a squirt bottle. The key to stopping their mouth is to occupy their nose.
